Leave No Trace...
The Boy Scouts of America and the Leave No Trace Center for outdoor Ethics have joined in a “memorandum of understanding” that authorizes the BSA to train our volunteers for the sole purpose of delivering the Leave No Trace program to BSA members. This has resulted in a significant savings to members and the ability to schedule courses to meet our needs. Its mission is to prepare members at all levels of Scouting to conduct outings and programs compatible with the principles of LNT.
Leave No Trace embodies the BSA’s philosophy of good stewardship of natural resources. Practicing the principles of LNT is now expected for any group utilizing public lands. The BSA represents on of the largest user groups that most public land agencies will see on an annual basis. It is critical that our members know the practices LNT regardless of the outdoor venue if we are to preserve our access to these important resources. Another important reason to implement this program is the pending changes of Boy Scout advancement requirements that will further integrate LNT concepts into Second and First Class rank requirements.
In order to fully integrate LNT into BSA programs, the task force will coordinate LNT Master Educator courses in 2008-2010 at locations convenient to every council. The emphasis is for each council to send at least one representative to a scheduled course. Ideally each council will have one or more LNT Master Educators and every district will have one or more LNT Trainers. Master Educators must successfully complete a five-day course preparing them to conduct two-day LNT Trainer courses. Both Master Educators and Trainers are authorized to conduct “LNT Awareness Workshops”. Workshops can vary from roundtable presentations to half-day or longer sessions. They are designed to be flexible and meet the needs of the audience.
If you are interested in attending, please contact the Council.
