Camper's Comments

Pete Jensen, Scoutmaster Troop 587 - Hutchinson, MN (June 2009)

"Myself, 4 other adults and 12 Scouts spent last week at Medicine Mountain Scout Ranch. We are based out of Hutchinson, MN and our summer camps are typically spent at one of three camps in our home council (Many Point, Phillips or Tomahawk). This year I suggested we visit the Black Hills, and the boys were quickly on board, and ready for a change of scenery. We had a great experience!

It's always a gamble when you attend week #1...New staff, new program ideas, etc. Your staff was well prepared and made sure the Scouts had a good experience. Meeting with Jim (Griz) and observing his interaction was very heart warming. It's not often that you meet a Scouter with his dedication, "from the heart" stories and interactions. He is truly an asset for your council and MMSR would not be the same without him. Thanks to him, his mother Sarah, and the entire staff for the wonderful Scouting experience. We'll definitely be back!"

Michael Butterfield, Bishop LDS Troop 350 - Cheyenne WY (June 2009)

"MMSR was a wonderful experience for our boys and adult leaders. As an LDS troop we were given the time and ability to hold church services at the chapel before registration. What a great experience for the boys to have. We all had a great week interacting with all of the staff. Our troop guides were always there to help in any way, giving the boys heads up on the events of the day. Our boys needed the chance to cook for themselves, and the food that was provided was given out during the week was done so, so that the first of the week were simple meals and during the week they progressed to be a little more involved. Great job by the commissary.

All of the program areas did a good job of making the boys feel welcome and to help them advance. Each boy was asked each day what they need to do to finish up the badges that they were working on and then they were led in the right direction to get them completed. This was all done by the young staff members they are to be commended. Each program area was involved w2ith this process, from the Hawk, Waterfront, Shooting sports, Crafts and Nature, we loved it all. We did not have any youth involved in the high adventure, but as adult leaders we went over to the copes area and were pleased with the involvement between the staff and the boys.

We loved the riddles and all of the clues that the staff presented to the boys to help keep them involved with interacting with staff and other troops, also the sos program for the adults was a good idea to get the leaders involved in earning camp awards.

The camp is a wonderful and beautiful area. I hope that many people will be able to enjoy the pristine beauty of MMSR.

I am not sure how you train your staff, but what ever you are doing keep it up, It was the best staff that I have seen. As a youth I was able to serve on camp staff for 4 years and we did not come close to the caliber of staff members that you have trained at MMSR Way to Go!

Thanks for a memorable week."

Norman (Moe) Kluksdahl, Troop Committee Chairman Troop 696 - Dickinson, TX (July 2008)

"Just wanted to pass along that my boys absolutely LOVED MMSR. We'd go back in a heartbeat if it were closer, and from what the program director (Ace) and the exec told us, there are hopes of even more high-adventure programs in the future. One member of our troop is hoping to convince his mom to take him on a vacation to South Dakota so he can spend at week at MMSR! The staff was wonderful, and we had a great time. As a testament to the amount of fun we had, most of the time our troop goes to resident camp, the boys are not motivated for the 'honor troop' awards. My boys were, and Troop 696 earned the White Buffalo award - the first honor troop award earned by Troop 696 in years!

If you’ve read the past reviews and been a little leery, I can only say that the camp I experienced is no way near the camp of the past reviews. Thank you for a wonderful camp. It is going to give lasting positive memories to my boys about how much fun they can have at a Scout camp."

Mark Rzeznik, Assistant Scoutmaster Troop 63 - Waukesha, WI (June 2008)

"I am writing to thank you and your staff for the Great Job they did for Troop 63 during Week 2 of Summer Camp. The boys are still talking about their experiences. As a leader, one of my jobs is to create lasting memories that our boys will carry forever. I would highly recommend Medicine Mountain to any Scout Troop looking for adventure and to create lasting memories for both their Scouts and Scouters."

Brian “Bear” Beyer, Troop 324 - Denver, CO (July 2007)

"I wanted to thank your Council and the Staff at Medicine Mountain Summer Camp for a great experience. The camp was great. The boys enjoyed everything that the camp had to offer. The Staff was wonderful.

I wanted to especially thank the Staff for making a special needs youth with Cerebral Palsy have an enjoyable week. He has never felt so liked and wanted. I signed him up in Scouting just two weeks prior to the trip. The Staff went above and beyond making him feel welcome. They played games with him. They even had him on their team during the camp game night. They often helped to get him from place to place and never complained. The Hawk (new Scout) program Staff was especially compliant to his needs. They made this summer probably the most memorable in his life. Next month he is going into surgery and will be in a body cast for several months. Now he has some really great memories to help him endure the time. I plan on bringing the troop back again in the future."
